Keynote presented by Dr. Frederic Fovet at the 2020 AHEAD Conference, Dublin
This keynote will seek to examine how accessibility services will need to adjust in order to adapt to the new reality of Universal Design for Learning implementation in Higher Education. It will examine current tension that exist between the existing format of disability service provision in higher education and the aims of UDL, and offer a rather dystopian vision of what challenges these units may face if this tension is not acknowledged and addressed. It will then consider a utopian vision of what a sustainable future might look like for accessibility services within a landscape of genuine inclusion in Higher Education. Lastly, the session will explore the repercussions of this reflection from the point of view of leadership and management of change.
This site was designed as a support structure for the Keynote. The Keynote will be delivered online on Thursday March 26th, 2020, as a result of the cancellation of the two day conference scheduled to take place in Dublin. The goal in designing this site is to embed a UDL approach to the Keynote delivery itself. It will serve as an alternate pathway to the material covered. It will also contain more details than we will have time to unpack during the Keynote itself. It will present this material in the shape of text and videos. Hence we hope that it provides multiple means of representation to the participants. Multiple means of action and expression have also been considered and participants will be able to navigate the site proactively before, during and after the Keynote presentation, a process which will ensure that their role varies and remains dynamic – instead of being limited to passive listening. Lastly, the intention here is also to provide multiple means of engagement by offering further reading and resources, ancillary angles and perspectives, as well as avenues for direct application of the content to each participant’s practice.

Frederic is an Associate Professor within the School of Education and Technology at Royal Roads. His practice and research focus on Inclusion, with a specific interest in learners with Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD). Frederic has been a K-12 teacher for a good portion of his career, and a school principal for a period of 7 years. Over the duration of his PhD., Frederic took on the role of Director of the Office for Students with Disabilities at McGill University. During these four years he was involved in developing UDL implementation across campus. This role also led to an increasingly more explicit grounding of Frederic’s work in Disability Studies. Frederic acts as a consultant and speaker on UDL, nationally and internationally, with regards to both the K-12 and post-secondary sectors. Frederic was the instigator and Program Chair of the three first Pan-Canadian Conferences on UDL, which took place in 2015, 2017 ad 2019, in Montreal, Charlottetown and Victoria respectively.
The aim of this website is to stretch our ability to dialogue on these important topics for much longer than just an hour. Questions, suggestions, requests for resources and ongoing discussions are therefore all warmly welcomed. These can be triggered through email (frederic.fovet@royalroads.ca), or through social media such as Twitter – either using the handle @Ffovet or the conference hashtag #AHEAD2020. Do not hesitate! ¶
